Description : Situated in Fitzroy, Sumner House is a warm and welcoming environment. Residents are involved in all decision-making about their care and are able to choose activities from a diverse lifestyle program so that they can enjoy independence and choices in how they live. Our staff encourage and assist them to pursue the interests and activities they had before they moved into Sumner House and maintain their connections to the community. If, over time, residents need more care, we can provide it so that they can remain living at Sumner House and avoid the disruption of moving. We have nursing staff present around the clock, and also visiting doctors and other health practitioners including physiotherapists, podiatrists, dieticians and psychologists. We provide specialised care and tailored activities for residents with dementia. Our 43 large individual bedrooms all have en suites, televisions, phone connection and wifi. Each cluster of bedrooms has its own lounge-dining room with kitchenette. Meals served in the central dining room are cooked in our own kitchen. Sumner House also offers a hairdressing salon with visiting hairdresser and an activities room that includes a small gym. Our lifestyle programs include painting, handcrafts, film and book discussion groups, an iPad training group, a public affairs discussion group and visits by school groups. We also keep computers and iPads for residents’ use and have wifi access throughout the building. Residents can relax outside in the tranquil landscaped courtyard and in the sunny rooftop garden, and enjoy regular outings in our bus, which has wheelchair access.

Most people in Australia would prefer to stay in their own home than move into an Aged Care Home. The government supports both situations and is increasingly shifting funding to care at home.
We’re lucky that the government helps to fund the cost of aged care. Everyone over the age of 65 years is entitled to some help. And yes, everyone is expected to contribute to the cost of aged care.
If you choose to access government subsidies you need to start by calling My Aged Care. My Aged Care will walk you through the steps you need to take, starting with a face – to – face assessment of your loved one’s needs. My Aged Care will also guide you through the fees you will need to contribute to the costs of care. You can then choose how you want to spend the government subsidies – this may mean support to stay at home or moving into an Aged Care Home. There is a delay of up to 8 weeks to access government subsidies. If you need help earlier you can pay for care directly.
