What is an Aged Care provider?

An Aged Care provider is a business or organisation who offers and delivers Aged Care services.

Providers of Aged Care include those who have residential Aged Care Homes, and those who deliver home care services.

Aged Care providers may employ staff directly or make use of a brokerage arrangement by outsourcing workers. Some aim to employ staff to perform their core services and then outsource additional staff for the less common services.

Approved Aged Care providers

Providers can choose to become “approved” providers by submitting an application to the government. An approved provider must deliver Aged Care services that align with the responsibilities and standards that are specified in the Aged Care Act 1997 and the Principles made under section 96-1 of the Act.

Only approved providers can receive subsidies for the delivery of Aged Care services. They are responsible not just for delivering quality care, but also for making decisions about the delivery of care, the financial management of government subsidies and the management of care recipient fees and payments.

Types of Aged Care providers

There are many different types of Aged Care providers. Some are small businesses who may only offer one or two services, others are large organisations who aim to offer all types of Aged Care services – if you have a Home Care Package, the size and reach of the organisation can be an important decision, as you want to find a provider who can offer you everything you need without paying high brokerage fees for those services that they do not have in-house.

Aged Care providers may have both Residential Aged Care Homes and Home Care, or just one of these.

Aged Care providers may offer their services to those with Home Care Packages and other sources of government subsidies, CHSP supports, those paying privately, or a combination of these.

Some of the services of Aged Care providers are:

  • Allied health (physiotherapy, occupational therapy)
  • Personal care
  • Gardeners
  • Cleaners
  • Nursing
