Support at Home: What It Means For You

If you've heard the term 'Support at Home,' and aren't quite sure what it means - you're definitely not alone. The Australian Government has introduced a new program called Support at Home, which has replaced the former Home Care Packages. If you're currently on a Home Care Package (Level 1 - 4), your package remains unchanged. On the other hand, new entrants to the system will be assessed under the Support at Home framework.

Here's what you need to know, in plain English (without the fancy jargon):

What Stays the Same

You still choose your own provider

Regardless of which program you're under, one thing remains the same: you have the right to choose your own provider. And that's exactly where CareAbout helps. We match you with a vetted provider who suits your needs, your location, and your funding level — whether that's a Home Care Package or Support at Home.

New Funding Categories

More personalised support

Support at Home introduces eight classification levels with funding categories for clinical care, independence, and everyday living. The aim is to better match funding to what you actually need — rather than fitting you into a one-size-fits-all level. Your contribution may also change depending on your financial situation.

No Need to Worry

CareAbout is across the changes

Our Care Advisors stay on top of every update so you don't have to. Whether you're on an existing Home Care Package or starting fresh under Support at Home, we'll walk you through it — step by step, in your own time.

What's Coming Up

Key Dates to Be Aware Of

1 July 2026: Price caps are being introduced for Support at Home services — designed to give you more transparency and control over what providers can charge.

No earlier than 1 July 2027: The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is expected to be phased out. If you're currently on CHSP, there's no immediate action needed — but it's worth planning ahead.

On a Home Care Package and wondering what changes?

If you're currently on a Home Care Package (Level 1–4), your package stays in place — you're grandfathered in. Our Care Advisors can help you understand your options under both programs. Call 13 13 00 — no cost, no obligation.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

We hear these questions every day — and they’re all good ones. If yours isn’t answered here, simply call us on 13 13 00 and we’ll walk you through it.

How do I find a My Aged Care provider?

There are two main ways. You can search the government’s My Aged Care Service Finder, which lists all approved providers by location. Or you can use CareAbout’s free matching service — we pre-vet providers and personally match you based on your package level, location, and care needs. Call 13 13 00 or complete our online questionnaire.

How do I find home care providers near me?

CareAbout connects you with quality Home Care Package providers anywhere in Australia — including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, and regional areas. Enter your postcode and we’ll find vetted providers near you who suit your specific care needs and funding level.

What is a Support at Home package?

Support at Home is the Australian Government's new aged care programme that replaced Home Care Packages for new entrants from November 2025. It uses 8 classification levels (1-8) based on your assessed care needs, with annual budgets ranging from $10,731 (Classification 1) to $78,106 (Classification 8). You need an assessment through My Aged Care to be approved. Existing Home Care Package holders have been transitioned with their allocated funding amount.

How much does CareAbout’s service cost?

Nothing. CareAbout is 100% free for families. We’re paid by the care providers in our network, so there’s never a cost to you — no hidden fees, no obligations. That’s a promise.

Can I switch my Home Care Package provider?

Yes, absolutely. Under My Aged Care rules, you have the right to change your Home Care Package provider at any time. Some providers charge an exit fee (typically 2–4 weeks of the package value), but our Care Advisors can help you understand your specific situation and make the switch seamless — with no gap in care.

What services are covered by a Home Care Package?

Depending on your package level, services can include: personal care (showering, dressing, grooming), domestic assistance (cleaning, laundry), meal preparation, transport to appointments, nursing care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, social support and companionship, home modifications, and assistive technology. Your Care Advisor can help you understand exactly what’s available at your level.

What is the My Aged Care Service Finder?

The My Aged Care Service Finder is the government’s online tool for searching aged care providers by location and service type. While comprehensive, it lists all approved providers without quality filtering or personalised recommendations. CareAbout offers a more guided alternative — we vet providers and match you based on your specific needs at no cost.

What is the difference between CHSP and a Home Care Package?

CHSP (Commonwealth Home Support Programme) provides entry-level support services for people with lower care needs — such as basic domestic help or transport. Home Care Packages (Level 1–4) provide more comprehensive, coordinated, and funded care for those with greater needs. If you’re on CHSP and your needs are increasing, speak to My Aged Care about being reassessed for a Home Care Package. CareAbout specialises in Home Care Package provider placement.
