Support at Home: What This Means For You

If you’ve heard the term ‘Support at Home,’ and aren’t quite sure what this means – you’re definitely not alone. Effective 1 November 2025, the Australian Government introduced a new program called Support at Home (SAH), an aged care reform that’s replaced both the former Home Care Packages (HCPs) and Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC). If you’re currently the recipient of a Home Care Package (Level 1 – 4), your package remains unchanged, and instead, you’re automatically transitioned under this new unified framework, which sees an expansive 1 – 8 Classification Levels.

Alternatively, if you’re new to applying for aged care funding, you’ll be assessed under the new Support at Home framework.

Here’s the high-level information you need to know (and in plain English without any confusing terms):

What Stays the Same

You still choose your own provider

Regardless of which program you’re under, one thing remains the same: You have the right to choose your own provider. And that’s exactly where CareAbout comes in. We personally match you with a vetted provider who suits your needs, your location, and your funding level – whether that’s a Home Care Package or a Support at Home Classification.

New Funding Categories

More personalised support

Support at Home introduces 8 Classification Levels with funding categories for Clinical Care, Independence, and Everyday living. The aim is to better match funding to what you actually need — rather than fitting you into a one-size-fits-all level. Your contribution may also change depending on your financial situation.

No Need to Worry

CareAbout is across the changes

Our Care Advisors stay on top of every update so you don’t have to. Whether you’re on an existing Home Care Package or starting fresh under Support at Home, we’ll walk you through it — step by step, in your own time.

What's Coming Up

Key Dates to Be Aware Of

1 July 2026: Price caps are being introduced for Support at Home services — designed to give you more transparency and control over what providers can charge.

No earlier than 1 July 2027: The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is expected to be phased out. If you’re currently on CHSP, there’s no immediate action needed — but it’s worth planning ahead.

Currently Receiving A Home Care Package? And Wondering, What's Changing?

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

We hear these questions every day — and they’re all good ones. If yours isn’t answered here, simply call us on 13 13 00 and we’ll walk you through it.

How Do I Find A My Aged Care (MAC) Provider?

There are two main ways. You can search the government's My Aged Care Service Finder, which lists all approved providers by location. There are currently 900+ providers nationwide. Alternatively, you can use CareAbout's free matching service: We thoroughly vet providers and only work with a handpicked panel of trusted and compliant providers. From here, we personally match you based on your allocated funding level, location, and specific care needs – saving you an immense amount of time, stress, and resources. We both match you and book an appointment with the provider you agree to. Simply call 13 13 00 or complete our online questionnaire.

How Do I Find Home Care Providers Near Me?

CareAbout connects you with quality Home Care Package providers across Australia – including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, and select regional areas. Simply enter your postcode, and we'll locate vetted providers (from our handpicked panel) who suit your specific care needs and allocated funding level.

What Is A Support at Home (SAH) Classification?

Support at Home (SAH) is the Australian Government's new aged care program, which has replaced the former Home Care Packages (HCPs) system since 1 November 2025. Support at Home offers a unified, single framework embodying an expansive 8 classification levels (1-8), based on your assessed care needs, with annual budgets ranging from $10,731 (Classification 1) to $78,106.35 (Classification 8). To be approved for Support at Home funding, you need to first be assessed through My Aged Care. Alternatively, existing Home Care Package recipients are automatically transitioned to Support at Home with their allocated funding amount.

How Much Does CareAbout’s Service Cost?

Nothing at all. CareAbout is a 100% free and independent service. We vigorously vet the select providers we choose to work with – if we wouldn't trust these providers with our own family, then we definitely wouldn't leave them to you. For each successful referral made, we're paid a referral fee from the provider. This is how we're able to continue CareAbout in helping older Australians and their families to find quality care nationwide. There's never a cost to you – no hidden fees, no obligations. And ultimately, the final decision is only your choice to make.

Can I Switch My Home Care Package Provider?

Yes, absolutely. Under My Aged Care rules, you have the right to change your Home Care Package provider at any time. Some providers charge an exit fee (typically 2–4 weeks of the package value), but our Care Advisors can help you understand your specific situation and make the switch seamless — with no gap in care.

What Services Are Covered by a Home Care Package?

Depending on your package level, services can include: personal care (showering, dressing, grooming), domestic assistance (cleaning, laundry), meal preparation, transport to appointments, nursing care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, and social support and companionship. Your dedicated Care Adviser can help you understand exactly what's available at your level.

What Is the My Aged Care Service Finder?

The My Aged Care Service Finder is the Australian Government's online tool for searching aged care providers by location and service type. While comprehensive, it lists all approved providers without quality filtering or personalised recommendations. Instead, CareAbout offers a more guided alternative – we vet providers and match you based on your specific needs at no cost.

What Is the Difference Between CHSP and a Home Care Package?

CHSP (Commonwealth Home Support Programme) provides entry-level support services for people with lower care needs, such as basic domestic help or transport. Home Care Packages (Level 1 – 4) provide more comprehensive, coordinated, and funded care for those with greater needs. Under the new Support at Home aged care reform, CHSP will be phased out by no earlier than 1 July 2027, and fully transitioned into the new framework. If you're on CHSP and your needs are increasing, please speak to My Aged Care about being reassessed for Support at Home. From here, CareAbout can assist you to navigate your aged care journey with greater confidence, by matching you a quality Support at Home provider only based on your personal needs.
