For Wherever You’re At, You’re Not Alone

Reading time: 4 minutes

Careabout For Wherever Youre At Youre Not Alone Jenny Hero

You might feel alone in this—but the truth is, hundreds of thousands of Australians are navigating the same journey right alongside you.

A journey that might look something like this:

  • Maybe you’ve just registered with My Aged Care and you’re wondering what happens next.
  • Maybe you’ve been approved for a Home Care Package (HCP) and are stuck in the limbo of the waitlist.
  • Maybe the funding has come through but you’re overwhelmed by provider options (and how to select the right provider for you).
  • Or maybe you’ve already been through it once and are now thinking about switching providers or getting better value from your package.

For whatever this journey might look like, there’s one universal truth to be known here: You are not alone—and you don’t have to figure it out on your own either.

Navigating a puzzling aged care system

Let’s be real this system is full of delays, jargon, unclear fees, and crossed wires. It’s confusing for professionals, let alone for everyday people trying to make the right choices for themselves or their loved ones.

The aged care system can feel like a maze (and that’s not your fault), so if you’ve ever felt like:

  • “I don’t know what the next step is…”
  • “Why is this taking so long?”
  • “Am I missing something?”
  • “Shouldn’t this be easier?”

Well, you’re not imagining it. And you’re certainly not the only one.

So, what’s involved when applying for a Home Care Package?

Understanding where you are in the process can make the whole journey feel a little less overwhelming. That’s why we’ve created this—

Here’s your simplified map of the Home Care Package path:

  1. Register with MyAgedCare: You (or your loved one) start the process, online, or over the phone.
  2. Get assessed (ACAT): A clinician visits the home and determines if you’re eligible for a package—this process is formally known as an ACAT assessment, as it’s conducted by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT).
  3. Get approved: If eligible, you’re placed on the national waitlist.
  4. Wait to be assigned a package: This can take months but CareAbout can help during this time.
  5. Choose a provider: Once your package is assigned, it’s time to select who delivers your care.
  6. Start receiving support: Your care plan kicks off and you can review or tweak it any time.
  7. Adjust or switch if needed: If something’s not working, you can change services or providers.

And here’s the thing most people don’t realise: You can reach out for help at any stage, not just when you’re assigned funding.

Real reassurance from the real stories of real people (just like you)

Every day, we talk to people navigating the same path as you, who tell us:

  • “I’ve had the letter sitting in a drawer for months.”
  • “I didn’t know I could get more help with meals, or physio, or cleaning.”
  • “I thought I had to stay with my provider forever.”
  • “I’m caring for Mum but it’s becoming too much, I didn’t realise there was support for me, too.”

If any of these expressions sound familiar to you, you’re in the right place.

Here for Every Step of Your Aged Care Journey

CareAbout is here to support you through every stage of your aged care journey, whether:

  • You’re just starting out: We can explain how the system works in plain language and help you prepare for your ACAT assessment.
  • You’re awaiting funding: We’ll keep you informed and help you get the most from interim services (like CHSP or private help).
  • You’ve just been assigned a package: We’ll match you with a provider who respects your time, values, and goals.
  • You’ve already got a provider: We can review your plan, compare what else is out there, and support you through a switch if needed.

We’re here to CareAbout you—and at no cost.

The CareAbout team was thorough

The CareAbout team was thorough and very helpful with matching my dad with the right care provider. They asked a number of questions in relation to my dad and what care he would require moving forward. Would recommend CareAbout if you're looking into a care provider or wanting to change care providers.

CareAbout made it so easy to find a nursing home

I was desperately looking for a nursing home that can provide respite care for my dad. Thankfully CareAbout has made it so easy. With just a few phone calls in the morning I was given a list of the suitable nursing homes, and in the afternoon I was able to find one that can accept my dad. Thank you for a great service!

Absolutely outstanding help and support

To be honest I didn’t expect much from CareAbout as I thought it would be an online only support, however my expectations were soon exceeded with the quality of help, support and continuous phone call follow ups to make sure I found an aged care facility for my dad. Billy made the process so easy and took the stress out of finding a suitable aged care facility.
