Can I buy a fridge with my Home Care Package?

Imagine this: your fridge is on its last legs. It’s buzzing and knocking, keeping you awake at night. Maybe it’s even running up your power bills because it’s so outdated. You’re wondering: Could your Home Care Package help replace it?

It’s a great question and one we hear all the time.

While Home Care Packages are incredibly flexible, they do come with rules about what you can and can’t spend your funds on.

So, where does a fridge fit into the picture? Is it covered, or is it off the list? Let’s find out!

First things first: What’s a Home Care Package?

A Home Care Package is a government subsidy that’s designed to help older Australians stay independent and comfortable in their own homes. Think of it as a bundle of support tailored to your needs – whether you’re looking for help with everyday tasks, personal care or even social activities.

The beauty of a Home Care Package is its flexibility. You work with a care provider to create a plan that suits you, making it as unique as your lifestyle.

There are four levels of packages, ranging from basic to high care needs, and each comes with a set amount of funding. But, as with anything, there are rules about how that funding can be spent.

Home Care Package levels

What can you spend your Home Care Package on?

The golden rule is: Your Home Care Package funding must go towards services that help you live safely and independently at home. Here’s a quick list of what’s typically covered:

  • Personal care: Assistance with bathing, dressing or grooming.
  • Household help: Cleaning, laundry and meal preparation.
  • Health services: Physiotherapy, nursing or allied health support.
  • Home modifications: Grab rails, ramps or shower aids.
  • Transport: Getting to appointments or community activities.

What’s off-limits?

While your package offers loads of flexibility, there are some no-gos. Here’s what you generally can’t spend your funds on:

  • Day-to-day living costs: Rent, utility bills or groceries.
  • Luxury items: That fancy holiday cruise is out, sorry!
  • Non-care-related household items: TVs, computers or standard appliances (more on this below).
  • Medical expenses: Services and items (e.g. general check-ups, medication) that are covered by other government initiatives (e.g. Medicare, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme).

The key is that whatever you use your funds for must directly relate to your care needs and goals as outlined in your care plan

So, can you buy a fridge with your Home Care Package?

The answer is … it depends!

If the fridge is just for storing your favourite snacks or keeping the milk cold for your morning coffee, it’s probably not covered. But, if a fridge is essential for your health or safety, then it could be considered a necessary expense.

For example, let’s say you need to store medications that require refrigeration, or you have specific dietary needs that depend on keeping certain foods fresh. In these cases, a fridge might qualify as a health-related item.

Discuss it with your care provider – they’ll help determine if it’s something that aligns with your care plan.

How to get the most out of your Home Care Package

Navigating the ins and outs of what’s covered can feel tricky, but here are some tips to make the most of your funding

  • Know your care plan: This is your roadmap. The more tailored your plan, the better your funding will work for you.
  • Communicate with your provider: Got questions about what’s included? Don’t guess – ask! Your provider is there to guide you.
  • Think creatively: Your package is about helping you thrive, so consider all the ways it can support your independence and wellbeing.
